Weekend Blessings - Feeding Hernando County Children

Weekend Blessings is a unique program designed to feed preschool, elementary, and middle school children whose families qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Price Meal program, and have little or no food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to this very successful program.

Every Friday, kids in schools that participate in the Weekend Blessings program get backpacks filled with sufficient food for the weekend. On Monday, the kids return the backpacks, ready to learn; then the cycle begins again the next Friday.  The backpacks include easy-to-prepare and ready-to-eat food items such as granola bars, peanut butter, tuna, crackers, mac & cheese, cereal, juice boxes, etc.

Weekend Blessings is administered, operated, and funded by People Helping People in Hernando County.  Groups from local civic organizations, churches, a synagogue, and a mosque partner with PHP by providing the logistical support needed to operate the program — the food shopping, and the packing, delivery, and pickup of the backpacks.  The Weekend Blessings program currently serves over 600 children through eleven Hernando County elementary and middle schools, two Hernando County Head Start programs, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hernando County.

Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers who make this possible!
